![]() The extension you are choosing does not matter, though you’ll obviously want to pick one that is compatible and accurately represents the file type otherwise it may make it unreadable to some applications.Ī few important points here: you must have show file extensions enabled on Mac otherwise the file extensions to change will not be visible or found by the replace tool, and secondly you must turn off the file extension change warning otherwise you will be repeatedly confronted with a dialog box to confirm the file extension has changed for each individual file extension change. In the example above we changed a group of image files from having a “.jpeg” file extension to having a “.PNG” file extension, but you can use this with any file extension, whether it’s changing a group of files from having. At the “Rename Finder Items” screen choose ‘Replace Text’ and then within the “Find:” section place the initial file extension, and under the “Replace with:” input place the file extension you wish to batch rename all of the selected files to, then click on “Rename”Īssuming you followed the above steps correctly, you will successfully have changed only the file extensions of the selected files, and not changed any of the names. Now locate the files or folder of files that you want to change the file extensions for in the Finder and select them all, then right-click (or Control Click) and choose “Rename XX Items…”.Check the box for “Show all filename extensions” and then uncheck the box for “Show warning before changing an extension”, then close out of Finder preferences. From the Finder of the Mac, pull down the “Finder” menu and go to “Preferences” and then go to “Advanced”.It’s a subtle difference but important if all you want to do is maintain file names but change the file extensions. We’re going to use the same rename feature that allows batch renaming of files on the Mac but with a few slight modifications to the usage and related system preferences so that it focuses on changing the file extension rather than the file name. This is also not changing the file names, it is only changing the extension that comes as a file suffix. We have plenty of articles about various file format and type conversions if you’re interested in that, however. Production excess attracts the robber’s halving blade, and if this investment into excess production trips the robber two or three times during a game, the twelve to twenty (or more) resources that were lost in these encounters with the robber are empty production. This “build to win” strategy is logical during the turn in question, but not when thinking of subsequent dice rolls by other players that might trigger the robber, which makes working towards an excess of production too early in the game counter-productive. The trap in this thinking goes like this: “I have an ore, a wheat, and a wool which I could use to buy a development card, but would it not be better to attempt trading the ore or the wool towards producing either a new settlement or a city upgrade that will increase the amount of resources coming to me?” Often, when four people are playing in Catan in this classic way, development cards are only bought in order to short one’s hand so as to avoid being a target for the robber, or at a late stage in the game after a deadlock caused by extensive road building and the cumulative reduction of available building spots through strategic, defensive, settlement placing and the “rule of one.” I have seen entire games played with only one or two development card purchases, as “build to win” players can’t get past their intuitive risk-assessment of buying development cards. Development cards only rarely produce resources (4 out of 25 cards), unlike the more solid investment potential of settlements and cities, that do produce resources when the correct dice are rolled. “Build to win” players rarely buy development cards, as an investment into development cards, to the intuitive or “build to win” player, is seen as a non-productive buy. Many probably don’t even consider this method of playing Catan as a strategy, but instead just consider it as the way that you play the game: you build roads to build resource-producing settlements, and upgrade settlements to make cities that produce twice as many resources. Yesterday, I mentioned what I call the “build to win” strategy, which i consider the most common strategy among Settlers of Catan players, no matter how long their attachment to the game. ![]() ![]() ![]() This cookie is set by Google and stored under the name. This is because normal paints are not made to seal in new drywall. The color won’t look true to what you saw in the store and your paint won’t spread on nicely either.Įven worse, this will continue to happen coat after coat. The sheen will show differently over the drywall boards vs the taped joints. If you were to bust out your paint of choice and start rolling over new drywall, you would quickly find that your topcoat looks uneven. There are surfaces that don’t have any drywall mud, there are taped joints with loads of mud, there are screw heads with much and on top of that everything is sanded quite roughly. New drywall is a very uneven painting surface. NOTE: PVA is actually used in many different products such as glue. This creates a more uniform surface which you can then apply your topcoat onto. A PVA primer goes onto new porous sheetrock and seals the pores and creates a soft even coat over the top of the sheetrock. When applied over Level 4 drywall, these high-build products provide a Level 5 finish, which I prefer under dark or glossy paint and in harsh lighting conditions.Drywall primer is the common name for PVA primers (Polyvinyl acetate). For high-build primer/surfacers, I like PPG Speedhide MaxBuild and Sherwin-Williams High Build Interior Latex Primer. These products can fill sanding scratches, smooth drywall fuzz, and hide other small surface imperfections. High-build primer/surfacers can contain 66% solids by weight, and they go on thick, around 20 or 25 mils wet, which is equivalent to four or five coats of regular paint. nap roller, but rollers only make sense for small jobs because spraying is much faster. you also can roll on standard primer/surfacers with a 3⁄8-in. Sprayers this size are lighter and less expensive than the spray rigs needed for high-build primer/surfacers, which require larger tips (0.023 in. ft.), these less-viscous primer/surfacers can be sprayed with less-powerful sprayers because they require a smaller tip (0.015 in. Besides being less expensive than high-build versions (6¢ per sq. These products won’t produce a Level 5 finish, but they do a good job when applied over Level 4 finished drywall, and they can prevent joint telegraphing in many cases. My favorites in this class include PPG Speedhide Interior Max Prime and Sherwin-Williams Builders Solution Interior Primer/Surfacer. These primer/surfacers have fewer solids (more than 40% by weight) than high-build products but still more than a run-of-the-mill PVA primer, which can contain as little as 30% solids by weight. The difference is in how thick they go on.įor less-demanding applications, such as under flat or nearly flat paint and on surfaces that won’t get raking light, I use standard products that apply in a coat of about 4 or 5 mils. There are two basic types of primer/surfacers: standard and high-build. These solids create a uniform surface that reflects light evenly. But primer/surfacers cover better because they have a greater percentage of solid particles than PVA primer. Primer/surfacers are similar and include the same vinyl acrylic base that seals the drywall paper and compound. You may have learned that PVA primer is the right primer for new drywall. However, by using a modern drywall primer/surfacer, a crew of three or four painters can prep and spray the walls and ceilings of an entire average-size house to a Level 5 finish in one day for less cost. One common way to prevent telegraphing is to go the extra step to what the National Gypsum Association calls a Level 5 finish, which has traditionally been done by skim coating the entire drywall surface with compound. Known as joint telegraphing, it’s a problem I’ve seen a lot in the 20 years I’ve been a painter. The condition is worse when there’s raking light and when walls are painted with dark or glossy paints. This means that when the wall is painted, the seams look darker and have a slightly glossier finish. ![]() Even though the walls and ceilings look and feel smooth to the touch, the drywall’s paper surface and joint compound have different porosities. This is a Level 4 finish as specified by the National Gypsum Association. Most new drywall has three coats of joint compound on corners and seams, but much of the drywall’s paper face is left uncoated. ![]() By Philip Hansell Drywall primer/surfacers are the first step in getting the perfect paint job. ![]() |
